Spelling Test Buddy vs Spelling Shed (2026): K-8 flexibility, or a K-5 program built around games
Spelling Shed is one of the most popular spelling programs in the world, and it’s very good at what it does. Both products now come with a spelling curriculum, so the differences are about grade range, games, rostering, and how you pay. The real difference is grade range and flexibility
Both products give you a spelling curriculum now, so you don’t have to build a year of lists yourself with either one.
Spelling Shed is a K-5 program. The scope and sequence, the games, the leagues, and the assessments are all built around it. If you teach elementary school and want one program that does everything, that’s a big strength.
Spelling Test Buddy covers K-8, and the curriculum is optional. Plenty of teachers already have lists from Wonders, Journeys, UFLI, Words Their Way, or a district scope and sequence. You can follow the Spelling Test Buddy curriculum, take a photo of the lists you already use, or mix the two. Either way, students get a test that reads every word and a sentence aloud, plus games, adaptive practice, and worksheets from the same words.
What Spelling Shed is better at
Younger students. Spelling Shed is built for K through 5, and it shows in the visuals, the sequence, and how the games work for early readers. If most of your students are in K through 2, it’s the better fit.
Motivation through competition. Leagues, leaderboards, and the hive games get some kids practicing at home without being asked. Spelling Test Buddy has seven games, but it doesn’t have that level of competitive meta-game.
Rostering. Clever, ClassLink, and Wonde rostering matter a lot to a district IT department, and Spelling Test Buddy doesn’t support Clever yet.
Native apps. Spelling Shed has iOS and Android apps with some offline play. Spelling Test Buddy is a web app you can add to the home screen, which works well on Chromebooks and iPads but needs a connection.
A free plan. Spelling Shed’s games are free. Spelling Test Buddy has a 14-day trial, then it’s paid.
What Spelling Test Buddy is better at
K through 8, in one place. One curriculum and one tool from kindergarten through 8th grade. Middle school students will use it without feeling talked down to.
Your own lists, when you want them. Upload a PDF, a Word or Excel file, or a photo of the printed list, and the test is ready with audio and a sentence for every word. You can change any sentence, and the audio regenerates.
Flexible licensing. License the whole school for $499 a year (30 teachers, unlimited students), or just the teachers who want it at $49.99 each. You don’t pay per pupil, so a school where only the 4th and 5th grade teams use it, or where classes are large, often pays less.
Practice that adapts to each student. Adaptive Learning Programs use spaced repetition. Each student gets daily sessions built from the words they keep missing, not the whole class list.
Worksheets from the same words. Every paid account includes Worksheet Creator: sorts, cloze, Look Say Cover Write Check, word matrices, UFLI-inspired Roll and Read, and 25+ other templates, made from the list you already entered.
Accent choice. US, UK, Australian, and Indian English. A teacher in Sydney and a teacher in Chicago hear the words the way their students say them.
No student accounts. Students open a class link and enter a short code. No emails, no full names required, which makes privacy reviews simpler. Spelling Test Buddy is a verified vendor in the Student Data Privacy Consortium.
A note on mixing them
Some schools use both: Spelling Shed as the K through 2 program, and Spelling Test Buddy from grade 3 up. If your school already pays for Spelling Shed in the early grades and it’s working, you probably don’t need me in those grades.
Questions
- Is Spelling Test Buddy cheaper than Spelling Shed?
- Often, yes. One teacher pays $49.99/year for up to 150 students. For a school, you can either buy the School plan ($499/year for 30 teachers and unlimited students) or license only the teachers who will use it. Spelling Shed charges per pupil, so you pay for every student in the licensed group. Spelling Shed does have a free plan for its games. Compare a Spelling Shed quote with your actual number of teachers and students.
- Does Spelling Test Buddy have a spelling curriculum?
- Yes, for grades K through 8. You can follow it, use your own lists from Wonders, UFLI, Words Their Way, or your district, or mix the two.
- Can I use my own word lists in Spelling Shed?
- Yes, Spelling Shed lets teachers create custom lists. The difference is how fast you can do it. Spelling Test Buddy reads a PDF, Word file, spreadsheet, or a photo of a printed list and builds the test, audio, and sentences for you.
- Which one is better for middle school?
- Spelling Test Buddy. Its curriculum runs through 8th grade, and the games and tests don’t look babyish to a 7th grader. Spelling Shed’s scheme and visual style are aimed at elementary students.
- Which one is better for kindergarten and first grade?
- Spelling Shed. Spelling Test Buddy’s curriculum starts at K, but the app expects students to type the word they hear, which works best from about grade 2 or 3. Spelling Shed’s games and visuals are designed for younger children.
- Do my students need logins?
- Spelling Shed uses student logins, which can be rostered through Clever, ClassLink, or Wonde. Spelling Test Buddy students open your class link and enter a short student code, with no email address or account.
