Spelling Test Buddy vs Quizlet for spelling (2026): a spelling tool, or a study tool for everything

Plenty of teachers run their spelling lists through Quizlet, because they already use it for everything else. It works, up to a point. Here’s where that point is, written by the person who makes Spelling Test Buddy.

Quizlet isn’t a spelling tool, and that’s fine

Quizlet is one of the most useful study tools ever made. Flashcards, Learn, Test, Match, Quizlet Live, and a huge library of sets for every subject. If you’re a middle school teacher who teaches science and social studies too, it’s probably already open in a tab.

Spelling is a narrower job, though. A spelling test means hearing the word, ideally in a sentence, and writing it with no visual hint. Then the teacher needs to know who got which word wrong, across several groups with different lists, every week. Quizlet can be bent into that shape, but it wasn’t built for it.

What Quizlet is better at

Every other subject. One tool for vocabulary, science terms, history dates, and foreign language. Spelling Test Buddy only does spelling.

Definitions and translations. Flashcards pair a term with its meaning. For ESL students learning what a word means, or a language class, that’s the right format.

Free. The free plan works on its own. Spelling Test Buddy has a 14-day trial, then it’s $49.99 a year.

Quizlet Live. The team game is a great classroom energizer, and kids love it.

Phone apps and a huge library. Native iOS and Android apps, and millions of ready-made sets.

What Spelling Test Buddy is better at

A real spelling test. Students hear the word, then the word in a sentence, and type it. That’s how spelling tests work on paper, and it’s how they work here. Sentences are generated for every word, and you can edit them.

Per-student results. Each test shows up on your Reports page as soon as a student submits. See who missed which word, print results, or export everyone’s scores as PDF or CSV.

Differentiated groups without the busywork. Put students in groups, give each group its own list, schedule pretests, practice days, and the final test, and reuse it next year. In Quizlet, that’s a pile of separate sets and links.

List entry from a photo. Snap the printed list or upload the PDF your curriculum came with.

Practice that schedules itself. Adaptive Learning Programs use spaced repetition across days and weeks, so words come back right before a student would forget them.

Spelling games and worksheets. Seven spelling games and Worksheet Creator, all made from the same list.

No ads, no student accounts. Students use a class link and a short code.

My honest take

If spelling is a small part of your week and Quizlet is already working, keep using it. If spelling is a weekly routine with a test on Friday and you’re managing more than one list, a tool built for spelling will save you time every week.

Questions

Can you give a spelling test on Quizlet?
Sort of. Put the spelling word on the card, turn on audio, and students type what they hear in Learn mode, which is where Quizlet’s old Spell mode now lives. Full access to Learn needs Quizlet Plus. It works for practice, but you won’t get a dictation test with sentences or a per-student gradebook built for spelling.
Is Quizlet free for teachers?
Yes. Quizlet’s free plan works, with ads for students and limits on some study modes. Quizlet Plus for teachers is $35.99 a year and removes ads for students and adds progress tracking.
Why switch from Quizlet to Spelling Test Buddy for spelling?
Usually for three reasons: students hear the word in a sentence the way a real spelling test works, you see each student’s results for each test, and differentiated lists for several groups take minutes instead of an evening.
Should I use both?
Lots of teachers do. Quizlet for vocabulary, science, and social studies; Spelling Test Buddy for the weekly spelling list. They don’t conflict.
