I’ve built a GPT that will let you generate your own spelling lists, Spelling Test Creator.
Open the GPT, and enter a combination of grade level, difficulty (easy, medium, hard) and (optionally) latin roots.
The system will generate 24 words for you, that you can then use in your own test!
For example, 6th grade medium spelling test may generate something like this:
You can get more creative too. Let’s say you want to create a list that is based on specific Latin roots. You can enter those in, and it will give you a focused list!
For example, 5th grade hard spelling test with Latin roots “gen”, “mort”, “bio” will generate something like this:

What is a GPT?
GPTs are custom versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT that combine instructions, extra knowledge, and any combination of skills.
OpenAI released GPTs in early November 2023. Many technologists like myself see them as OpenAI’s attempt to create an “App economy” similar to the App Store.
Currently, to get access to GPTs, you need to be a subscriber to ChatGPT+, which costs for $20/month.
