Introducing Spelling Blast: Block Puzzles Meet Spelling Practice

Spelling Blast is a block puzzle game in the style of Block Blast! and Tetris, combined with spelling practice from your own word list. Students tap one of three blocks to pick it up, then tap the 8x8 grid to place it. Fill a complete row or column and it blasts away, making room for more. After every 3 blocks placed, students spell one of their words.

Spell every word on the list to win, and rack up the highest score you can along the way. If the board fills up and there’s no room to place another block before the list is finished, the game ends early, so students have to plan ahead as they play.

Because a word check arrives after every 3 blocks, spelling happens in short, low-pressure bursts rather than as one long drill. Students stay in the flow of the game, get repeated exposure to every word on their list, and build spatial reasoning and planning skills at the same time. How to Play Spelling Blast

1. Pick up a block — Tap one of the three blocks in the tray to select it.
2. Place it on the grid — Tap the 8x8 grid to put it down (dragging works too).
3. Clear lines — Fill an entire row or column and it blasts away.
4. Chain combos — Clear lines on back-to-back moves to build a combo multiplier, up to x8.
5. Spell a word — After every 3 blocks, spell one of your words correctly to keep going.
6. Finish the list — Spell every word on the list to complete the game and see your final score. The game also ends early if none of your blocks fit on the board.

How Scoring Works

Points add up quickly as students place blocks, clear lines, and spell words:

• Each square placed: 1 point
• Clearing 1 line: 10 points
• Clearing 2 lines at once: 20 points
• Clearing 3 lines at once: 60 points
• Clearing 4 lines at once: 120 points
• Clearing 5 lines at once: 200 points; 6 or more: 300 points
• Combo multiplier: clear lines on back-to-back moves to multiply the line bonus, up to x8
• Emptying the whole board: 360 bonus points
• Correctly spelling a word: 50 points
• Incorrectly spelling a word: -10 points
