The best spelling program for schools and districts (2026)
Full disclosure: I make Spelling Test Buddy and sell a School plan. I’ll still tell you where the bigger players are the better choice, because for some schools they clearly are. School-wide decisions come down to things individual teachers don’t think about: rostering, privacy agreements, purchasing, and whether every grade ends up on the same page.
| Program | Best for | School pricing | Rostering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spelling Shed | a K-5 curriculum across the whole school | Per pupil, by quote | Clever, ClassLink, Wonde |
| Vocabulary A-Z | schools already using Learning A-Z | By quote | Through Learning A-Z |
| Spelling Test Buddy (mine) | K-8 curriculum or teachers’ own lists | $499/year: 30 teachers, unlimited students; or $49.99 per teacher | Bulk import; no Clever yet |
| Spelling Stars | Google Classroom schools | Quote for 100+ students | Google Classroom |
Curriculum or tool?
A curriculum means everyone teaches the same patterns in the same order, with the same lists. It’s great for consistency, especially in K to 3. Spelling Shed (K-5), Vocabulary A-Z (K-5), and Spelling Test Buddy (K-8) all provide one.
A tool means teachers keep the lists they already have (from your ELA curriculum, UFLI, Words Their Way, or a district scope and sequence), and the software handles tests, practice, data, and differentiation. Spelling Test Buddy does this too, and teachers can switch between its curriculum and their own lists.
If your ELA adoption already includes a spelling scope and sequence, buying a second curriculum creates conflict. A tool fits better, or one like Spelling Test Buddy where the curriculum is optional.
Questions that rule products out
- Rostering. Do you require Clever or ClassLink? If yes, check that first.
- Privacy. Does the vendor have a signed agreement in your state’s Student Data Privacy Consortium, or will they sign yours?
- Purchasing. Can you pay by PO and invoice?
- Grade span. One product for K to 8, or different products for primary and upper grades?
1. Spelling Shed
If you want one sequenced spelling program across an elementary school, Spelling Shed is the strongest option: a phonics and morphology scheme, games and leagues, apps, and the rostering district IT wants. Per-pupil pricing is easy to budget, though you pay for every student in the licensed grades. It’s aimed at elementary, so middle schools may want something else. Spelling Test Buddy vs Spelling Shed.
2. Vocabulary A-Z
If your school already uses Raz-Kids or Reading A-Z, adding Vocabulary A-Z means the same vendor, the same student portal, and probably an existing purchasing relationship. It’s vocabulary-first, K-5. Spelling Test Buddy vs SpellingCity.
3. Spelling Test Buddymine
Mine. You can license the whole school (a flat $499 a year for up to 30 teachers and unlimited students) or only the teachers who want it ($49.99 each). Because it isn’t priced per pupil, it often costs less than per-pupil programs, especially when only some grades use it or classes are large. Teachers can follow the K-8 spelling curriculum or keep the lists from your ELA curriculum, and every list gets read-aloud tests, games, adaptive practice, worksheets, and reports. Lists and folders can be shared across grade-level teams.
On privacy: students don’t need email addresses or full names, and Spelling Test Buddy is a verified vendor in the Student Data Privacy Consortium. You can buy by quote, PO, and invoice.
Where it falls short: no Clever or ClassLink rostering yet, no native apps, and K-1 students who can’t type yet are better served by Spelling Shed.
4. Spelling Stars
If Google Classroom is your system of record, Spelling Stars syncs rosters, assignments, and grades, and gives parents a login. Spelling Test Buddy vs Spelling Stars.
My pick
K-5 school that wants one curriculum: Spelling Shed.
Already a Learning A-Z school: Vocabulary A-Z.
K-8, or only some teachers need it, and no Clever requirement: Spelling Test Buddy, licensed school-wide or per teacher.
Clever is required: Spelling Shed or Vocabulary A-Z today. If you’d like Spelling Test Buddy to add Clever, tell me. School requests decide what gets built next.
What I’d do this month
- Ask three teachers per grade where their spelling words come from today. That tells you curriculum or tool.
- Get your rostering and privacy requirements in writing from IT before talking to vendors.
- Pilot with one grade-level team for a month, using real lists and real students.
- Compare total cost for the teachers and students who will actually use it. Per-pupil and per-teacher pricing can come out very differently.
Questions
- Can we pay for Spelling Test Buddy with a purchase order?
- Yes. We accept quotes, POs, invoices, and checks for Standard and School plans (minimum $100). See Spelling Test Buddy for Schools and Districts.
- Is Spelling Test Buddy FERPA and COPPA compliant?
- Yes. It’s compliant with FERPA, COPPA, PPRA, and several state student privacy laws, and it’s a verified vendor in the Student Data Privacy Consortium. Students don’t need email addresses or full names. Read the Student Privacy Protection Policy.
- Does Spelling Test Buddy support Clever?
- Not yet. Teachers bulk-import students, and students sign in with a class link and a short code. If Clever is a requirement, Spelling Shed or Vocabulary A-Z may be a better fit today.
- Can teachers share lists across a grade level?
- Yes. Teachers can share lists and whole folders with their team, and everyone sharing a list can edit it and assign it to their own students.
