The best Quizlet alternatives for spelling (2026)

Quizlet is a fantastic study tool. But a spelling test isn’t a flashcard, and teachers who run weekly spelling through Quizlet usually hit the same walls. Here are the alternatives built for spelling. I make one of them, and I’ll tell you when you should stay on Quizlet.

Where Quizlet falls short for spelling

No real spelling test. A spelling test means hearing the word, ideally in a sentence, with no visual clue. Quizlet’s closest equivalent is typing what you hear in Learn, and sentences only exist if you type them onto every card.

Reports aren’t built for spelling. You want to know who missed which word on Friday’s test, and which words the whole class is struggling with. Quizlet’s progress tracking is designed around study sets, not weekly spelling tests.

Differentiation is manual. Three groups with three lists means three sets, three links, and keeping track of who uses which.

1. Spelling Test Buddymine

weekly spelling tests with sentences, per-student reports, and groups
Price
$49.99/year for up to 150 students; 14-day free trial
Grades
3 to 8, plus intervention, ESL, and adults

I make this. It’s built for the job Quizlet doesn’t do: upload or photograph the list, and each word gets audio plus a generated sentence. Students take a dictation-style test that grades itself, you see each student’s results immediately, and groups, schedules, and reusable assignments handle differentiation. Spaced-repetition practice, seven games, and worksheets come from the same list. No ads, no student accounts.

What you give up: every non-spelling subject, flashcards with definitions, Quizlet Live, and native phone apps. Full comparison with Quizlet.

Questions

Does Quizlet still have Spell mode?
Spell mode was folded into Learn, where students type what they hear. Free accounts get a limited number of Learn rounds per set; full access needs Quizlet Plus.
What's a free alternative to Quizlet for spelling?
SpellingJoy is free for K-6 and is built for spelling. Spelling Training is a simple free site for practicing one list. Spelling Shed’s free plan covers its spelling games.
Should I stop using Quizlet?
Not for other subjects. Many teachers keep Quizlet for vocabulary and content-area terms and use a spelling tool for the weekly spelling list.
